Pick a preferred TV or speaker for video and audio playback

You can choose a media playback device that will always play your video and audio without having to include the device's name in your voice command.

Set your preferred media playback device 

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. In the top right corner of the Home screen, tap Devices Devices to see available Google Home devices. 
  3. Scroll to find the device card for the device you want to adjust. 
  4. In the top right corner of the device card, tap the device card menu More menuand thenSettings.
  5. Under "Device settings", tap Media Playback.
  6. Under "Listen on" is a list of TVs and speakers linked to your Google Account. Tap your preferred TV or speaker. 
  7. Under "Watch on" is a list of TVs linked to your Google Account. Tap your preferred TV. 

To reset your preferred device, tap More menuand then Reset to defaults. 

Tips and tricks 

  1. To play media on your Google Home device and not your preferred TV or speaker, say "Ok Google, play <media> on <Google Home device name>.
  2. Unsupported features
    1. Podcasts will play locally on Google Home, not on a TV or speaker.
    2. News won't play on TV devices, so if you set a TV as your preferred "Listen on" device, Google Home will play it locally instead.
  3. You must be linked to the Google Home device to be able to set its preferred TV or speakers
  4. You can set as preferred audio or video output any device/group that's inked to any of the users linked to the specific Google Home.
  5. When the preferred device is not available (offline, powered off) you'll hear a message letting you know it's unavailable. 
  6. When you Factory Data Reset your Google Home device or your preferred TV / Speaker you will need to reapply the setting.
