We’re rolling out a software update to help you continue to use smart home devices and try new features on Google Home.

To check if your Google Home requires this update, say a command like “Ok Google, turn on the lights” and you may receive a message to upgrade. You can also check the Google Home app or Google app using the steps below.

From the Google Home app

Step 1. Unlink devices 

1. Open the Google Home app .
   
2. In the top left corner of the Home screen, tap Menu .
   
3. Verify that the Google Account that is listed is the one linked to Google Home. To switch accounts, click the triangle to the right of the account name.
   
4. Tap More settings  Home control.
   
5. In the "Devices" tab, tap Add   .
   
6. Tap a device labeled "Upgrade!" 
   
   1. Note: If you don’t see any devices with the word “update” next to them, you can continue to use your Assistant without completing these steps. 
      
7. In the top right corner of the screen, tap More Manage Accounts.
   
8. Tap on the account you’d like to unlink. 
   
9. Tap Unlink account Unlink. 
   
10. At the bottom of the screen, you’ll see confirmation of the unlinked account. 
    

Step 2. Connect devices to Google Home

You can name a device the same name you assigned it in the partner app or create a nickname in the Google Home app.

1. In the "Devices" tab, you'll see devices connected to Google Home.
   
2. Tap the device you want to set a nickname for.
   
3. Tap Set a nickname  enter a nickname  OK.
   
4. To see your device’s new nickname, tap Device details.
   

Note: Nicknames are alternate ways to reference devices in the Google Home app. Nicknames you've assigned to devices in the Google Home app are not reflected in the partner app.

Step 4. Assign devices to a room

To control your devices more easily, assign them to a room.
